Designing a Company Culture That Actually Scales

Every founder says culture matters. Few design it deliberately. The result is a company that runs on the founder's personality until it hits 30 people — then everything breaks.

Strong cultures share three traits: explicit values tied to real decisions, rituals that reinforce them weekly, and leaders who model them under pressure. Everything else is decoration.

Write down the behaviors you reward and the ones you refuse to tolerate. Then hire, promote, and fire against that list. Culture is what you permit, not what you preach.

The companies that scale gracefully are the ones whose culture was strong enough to outlive the founder's daily involvement.
